Soil Remediation Guides

Timeline

Scope of Work

Soil remediation guides were developed for risk prevention and management of contaminated soils. Details of approach are presented in six methodology guides for application in reclamation projects, especially in all situations where contaminated soil might create health, ecological and societal risks.

Conclusions

These guides serve as decision support tools for risk prevention and management of contaminated sites and soils. They propose a risk management strategy to handle situations involving prevention and remediation of sites and soil contamination. Guide M (Management) was developed for company managers and presents policy, overall strategy, and summary of the 5 other guides; Guide 0 (Prevention) describes precautions that should be taken so that installation design, construction and operations take into account environmental risks; Guide 1 (Tools) describes tools needed to correctly investigate a site or do a risk assessment; Guide 2 (Remediation – Pre-Project) gives instructions on using cost/advantage approach to determine remediation strategy; Guide 3 (Remediation – Project) makes recommendations for optimum management of remediation projects; and Guide 4 (Countries – Actors and Markets) describes features of the soil decontamination market, and countries who are operators in the soil decontamination sector.
