Project

As-Built Human Footprint Dataset Map

Timeline

2013-2015

Scope of Work

The COSIA As-Built Footprint Dataset exists to quantify and characterize the footprint of oil and gas-related activities throughout the Oil Sands Region utilizing multiple datasets including the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI) Human Footprint Map. The resulting map reconciles geospatial information in addition to industry-specific and site-specific data including: Footprint Feature, Disposition Number, Owner/Creator, Unique Well Identifier, Approval Number, Status, Product Type, Well Type, Road Class, Reclamation Status

Conclusions

Currently, available footprint tracking datasets (i.e. ABMI Human Footprint Map, DIDs Application, AER well sites, and pipelines, among others) have unique strengths and weaknesses in their ability to depict and characterize the as-built footprint within the province. Some databases do not align spatially, making it difficult to link attributes between datasets. By establishing a consistent and repeatable geospatial process, we can develop a comprehensive as-built footprint dataset for stakeholders. This dataset will provide easily accessible, detailed information on the current footprint and enable measurement of changes over time.
