Project
Best Practice for Stray Gas Investigation Techniques
Timeline
2013
Scope of Work
Stray gas is a gaseous material consisting primarily of methane that may be from an undetermined source and located in an area where the presence of the gas may cause hazardous conditions or affect groundwater. The Best Practice for Stray Gas Investigation Techniques was prepared to introduce Exxon Mobil’s Environmental Services Company (EMES) project managers and consultants to current concepts on stray gas baseline assessment and investigation techniques in support of risk-based management of potential impacts associated with stray gas. The project provides standards, guidance, and practical support to help EMES project managers conduct consistent, cost-effective stray gas investigations using appropriate assessment methods.
Conclusions
This project will allow stray gas assessments to be based on appropriate and defensible scientific methods and streamline response efforts through timely assessment and characterization when gas migration situations arise
