Project
Camp Food Waste reduction
Timeline
2019-2020
Scope of Work
ConocoPhillips Canada partnered with EcoGrowth (based out of Cochrane, Alberta) to adapt their patented EcoGrowth Organic Reactor (EGOR (TM)) technology as a fit for purpose solution to multiple problematic waste streams; organics, paper and grease at an in situ facility focused on the main residence and kitchen. The pilot project required several iterations to adapt the equipment to meet safety and throughput capacity requirements to service the Surmont Regional Residence, which typically houses several hundred people.
Conclusions
The result is a safe pragmatic camp food waste diversion system that reduces camp waste by over 200 tonnes per year, reduces pressure on regional landfill (extends landfill lifespan), reduces truck traffic and GHG emissions on hwy 881 (increased safety), reduces carbon footprint and reduces costs. Eco-Growth Environmental won an Emerald Award in the Small Business category for their work at Surmont facility. Future potential for output to be used as fuel for a modular boiler system to combust food waste to generate heat, and for input to be fed into a composting system to create soil amendments.
