Project

Silviculture Toolkit for Enhancing Reclamation Success

Timeline

2017-2018

Scope of Work

This toolkit consists of a series of brochure-style guides produced by a partnership between Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA) and the Canadian Forest Service – Natural Resources Canada (NRCAN). The products demonstrate how forestry techniques can be used for reclamation of Alberta’s boreal forest. Tried and true forestry principles can help expedite reclamation goals and improve the predictability of reclamation outcomes.

Conclusions

Forestry principles outlined by the guides include: regeneration planning, site preparation, soil salvage, soil decompaction, planting, mounding, and vegetation control (mechanical, chemical and biological). By capitalizing on the knowledge of site characteristics and regeneration potential, companies can reduce long-term reclamation costs. See individual brochures for specific conclusions related to each topic.
