Snapshots of In-Situ Oil Sands Extraction Reclamation and Restoration Practices
Timeline
2013
Scope of Work
This project provides a brief snapshot of each practice and reference to applicable literature. In each practice snapshot you will find: A description of the practice; The practice rationale from an ecological and regulatory standpoint; Practice application including implementation considerations; Advantages and Disadvantages of the technique; Future opportunities related to the practice
Conclusions
The compilation of information concludes that reclamation of in-situ oil sands facilities faces unique challenges due to high-density, small-scale disturbances and variability in ecosystem resiliency. Current reclamation efforts have focused primarily on exploration facilities, while production facilities remain largely unreclaimed and will require future attention. Key recommendations include clearly defining reclamation goals at industry, regional, site, and project levels to guide consistent implementation. Improved training, communication, and knowledge transfer among COSIA members are critical to standardizing reclamation practices and ensuring effective restoration. The development of plain-language, science-based guidebooks for construction and reclamation is recommended to provide ecosite-specific guidance and support field decision-making. Overall, the project highlights opportunities to advance reclamation practices through ongoing research, collaboration, and iterative updates as new information becomes available.
