Project

Suncor Boreal Caribou Corporate Strategy and Research Gap Analysis

Timeline

2015-2016

Scope of Work

Suncor’s Corporate Caribou Strategy was developed to address the risk of operating in areas inhabited by the threatened woodland caribou. The Strategy’s goal was to guide actions, both internally and externally, towards mitigating impact on boreal caribou and enabling Suncor to continue to operate and grow in caribou zones. This Strategy prepares for the provincial regulations expected in 2017 in response to a Federal Caribou Recovery Strategy.

Conclusions

Reviewing Suncor’s efforts on caribou activities reinforced the need for company preparedness and alignment since work currently occurs under eight VPs and across three business units. A gap analysis identified that work must expand beyond focus on caribou conservation research to include policy and stakeholder engagement, reclamation planning and operational implementation of caribou habitat reclamation. Specific risk management recommendations were compiled in a report and presentations.
