Project
Foothills Research Institute 20 Year Overview Report
Timeline
2012
Scope of Work
Since 1992, the Foothills Research Institute (formerly the Foothills Model Forest) has conducted applied research on the ecological, cultural, social, and economic values of Alberta’s forested landscapes. FRI’s mandate has expanded from forest management to integrated land and resource management across Alberta and beyond, supported by a growing network of partners. Over the years, research initiatives have evolved to include practical tools for practitioners, communication of results to the public, and demonstration of sustainable management practices. The Institute continues to support decision-makers through knowledge creation, collaboration, and innovative programs that address emerging land-use challenges. In this project, a report contains a list and summaries of the large variety of projects FRI has worked on.
Conclusions
FRI has built a strong legacy of advancing sustainable land and resource management in Alberta through partnerships, applied research, and knowledge transfer. Its ability to adapt to changing needs—expanding from regional to provincial and international scope—demonstrates the strength of the FRI model. The Institute’s work has provided practical tools, informed policy, and fostered management excellence through science-based decision-making. Looking forward, FRI is well-positioned to continue leading in sustainable land management through new programs, global collaboration, and ongoing innovation.
