Project
Biodiversity Management Planning Toolkit
Timeline
2013-2015
Scope of Work
This project contains Teck’s biodiversity management plan, Biodiversity Conservation Toolkit, and guidance manual, which integrate biodiversity considerations into all five stages of the mining life cycle. The plan outlines operational objectives, key questions, and step-by-step processes for each mining stage, supported by tools such as biodiversity element definitions, consultation checklists, and integration into environmental and socio-economic assessments. It also provides guidance for designing and implementing effective biodiversity offsets to achieve a net positive impact, with particular attention to sustainable, long-term outcomes. Additionally, the project incorporates practitioner insights and field study findings on watercourse reclamation and vegetation regeneration techniques to strengthen on-the-ground biodiversity outcomes.
Conclusions
The process for creating a Biodiversity Management Plan involves nine key steps: 1) Delineate the project area, 2) Identify and consolidate biodiversity features, 3) Assess potential impacts of planned activities, 4) Conduct a risk and impact assessment, 5) Develop additional mitigation measures and update the assessment, 6) Identify biodiversity enhancement opportunities, 7) Calculate required offsets, 8) Develop targeted action plans, and 9) Implement actions and monitor outcomes.
