Cold Lake Operations Wetland Inventory LJ0026

Timeline

2009-2014

Scope of Work

Starting in 2009, Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) partnered with Imperial Oil Resources to help advance sustainable development in the boreal wetlands of northeastern B.C. (Fort Nelson Partnership) and northeastern Alberta (Cold Lake Partnership). A key goal of the Cold Lake Partnership includes a wetland/land use inventory for the Cold Lake area, focused on understanding wetland features within the operational area and the application of that knowledge for use in planning future development to minimize wetland disturbance. The project is on the leading edge of supporting the land use frame work initiative in Alberta (NE regional planning area).

Conclusions

Key Accomplishments: Cold Lake wetland inventory and waterfowl distribution products of 4 million hectares (10.3 million acres) and Conservation Accomplishments including: (1) trumpeter swan observation data, (2) waterfowl habitat potential; (3) ecological classification groupings (soil moisture, hydronamics, nutrients). Other recent partnership activities listed in the 2013 Partnership Update document include delivery of reports, field guides, summaries, a discussions paper, and responding to various third party data requests, as well as participation in meetings, workshops and field tours.
