Wetlands
Wetlands
Wetlands are complex ecosystems that have unique soils, vegetation, and hydrological functions.
They are highly diverse and productive ecosystems that increase landscape biodiversity and carbon storage. Since over 50% of the Athabasca Oil Sands Region of northeastern Alberta is covered by wetlands, they comprise a significant proportion of operational tenures. Although companies try to prioritize avoidance and mitigation strategies, research into how these systems work and how they can be built or reclaimed is still essential to improving oil sands restoration work.
