Riparian Test Plots At Wapisiw Lookout

Timeline

2010

Scope of Work

In 2010, riparian test plots were established at Wapisiw Wetland to assess the effectiveness of guided revegetation using a species selection tool based on soil moisture and salinity. Twelve plots were created with two soil types—LFH and peat-mineral—half of which were planted with selected native species and half left to natural colonization. Diverse vegetation was introduced to support wildlife, including moose and Canadian toads, and competitive species were excluded to promote native growth. Monitoring includes plant survival, water levels, and wildlife use, with the goal of improving biodiversity in reclaimed habitats.

Conclusions

The Riparian Guide is a comprehensive guide for riparian plant community establishment along environmental gradients, primarily soil moisture and salinity. Ongoing riparian revegetation field trials will guide reclamation practitioners on optimal planting strategies (unassisted colonization versus planting) according to site conditions and so optimize the efficacy of the riparian species selection tool.
